Funny sometimes, how things work out. Yesterday I woke up on the wrong side of the bed; so far in fact that its a wonder I was even in the bed at all! But I went to coffee with my mom and she kindly invited me to come learn how to do stained glass at her house and whaddaya know, I had SUCH a good time that I forgot all about which side of the bed I woke up on! Believe me, there will be more glass projects on the horizon. We weren’t sure grandpa was going to hand over the soldering iron, but I figured if he was happy, we all should be.
Today, I went back again, this time to visit with the grandparents. Well, that was enjoyable as usual, even if grandpa did ditch grandma and I so he could do a little grocery shopping! I’m sure he felt better, not leaving her alone, and she was happily showing me her craft projects and pondering just how in the hell her yarn all got so tangled. Then grandpa returned and invited me to lunch. I am pretty glad I had already made up my mind to be a good guest when out and about, eating what is offered and not whipping out a ‘Meat is Murder’ tshirt because grandpa cooked up some chicken and the is no way on gods green earth that I would risk hurting his feelings by proclaiming myself a vegetarian. So, I’m still eating meatless everytime, everywhere else, but it was more important to let grandpa be proud of his newly acquired cooking skills. I wonder if this makes me less ‘authentic’ though, in the veg world?
Re your “question” about being less authentic in the vegetarian world – do you care? You made a decision, had a wonderful lunch, and another afternoon of a great memory.
You could have stuck to your vegetarianism, but chose not to upset your grandfather. To anyone who might have a problem with that, use the words of Leroy Jethro Gibbs – stick it.
Dogear6,
I like the way you think!!!

Thanks!
Thought I’d pass along to you – I was flipping through a Mollie Katzen cookbook and she has meat recipes in it. I checked the name on the front and it was hers. Lorna Sass has written some great vegetarian cookbooks but other ones have meat in them.
I’m glad I could encourage you. I think your wonderful afternoon is something you always remember. The magic happens when we least expect it and something goes from ordinary to special without us even noticing it at the time.
I figure, the older my parents are, the more I should appreciate EVERY MINUTE I have with them. My kids, because of remarriages, are blessed to have 4 sets of grandparents that they see regularly. In the past 5 years or so, 3 have had Cancer come into their lives. EAT THE CHICKEN!! It will always give you a memory to smile about forever!!
