How darned “granola” can I get? Next thing you know, I’ll give up shaving so I can braid my leg hair…
Over at Green as a Thistle, Vanessa suggested using coconut oil in place of deodorant. Ummm, say what? I was nearly certain she recently purchased stock in a coconut grove, but I’m always willing to try something new, especially if it seems a bit off-the-wall.
Her recipe: Get some coconut oil. Apply it to your underarms (I will add “lightly” here, since a little goes a long way). Simple, right? Also earth-friendly and multipurpose (though I recommend setting a small amount aside specifically for hygiene, rather than sharing your frying oil with your armpits or vice versa). AND you can reuse the jar for something else once it’s empty, unlike a roll-on! Neato!
But, does it work?
So, the verdict. I’m 8 days in, sans store-bought deodorant, and I have to tell you… it’s a HIT. I love coconut oil! Not just as a deodorant, but also as an antiperspirant (so far). Admittedly it seemed a tad stickier than Degree at first, but not enough to be bothersome. I even created a “scented” batch with essential oil (which I’ve been using as a solid perfume since the unscented coconut oil worked better for deodorant).
I haven’t noticed any obnoxious (or even mildly unpleasant) armpit stench or anyone standing any further away from me than usual. I’m sweat-free too, not that I sweat much anyway, but believe me - I keep checking! Honestly though, my friends would totally say something if they noticed a green cloud of funk following me around.
Coconut oil. Who knew?

This stuff does work! It’s crazy but true…and the Coco-Deo scented you made was heavenly!! Amber-Sandalwood…yes I do smell divine!
REALLY? I’d seen directions for baking soda/cornstarch/ coconut oil/essential oil deodorant recently and was planning to try it. Huh. I just finished a batch of healing balm, so all my oil are right behind me. I’ll have to give it a go! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Kimberly! Yes, the coconut oil totally works. And I’m not sure why, but my underarm hair has slowed down growing. Nuts, right? But I melted up some last week with some amber and sandalwood to make a scented version – not bad, but I truly think I like the unscented better!
